The Treatment
Fathers and teachers, who knows what is hell?
I reminisce without a story to tell.
But i've been sick, i'm checking in to get well.

They made it clear that i would be confused
"The unexpected makes it better for you."
Benefits... pen in fist... "sign here if you approve."

I think it started back when we were told
that one is half and two is whole.
I take my pill, it takes it's toll.

Now it's clouding my eyes and flooding my veins
My mouth's getting dry and my hands they shake

So if love is a drug
I ain't taking enough
cause i don't feel no better off!

There's a line in and out the door,
Befuddled masses of the purpose poor
learning their lesson and coming back for more.

"If i wait who's gonna rescue me?"
"And am i safer on the shore or at sea?"
"And... what came first, the treatment or the disease?"

Cause it's clouding my eyes and flooding my veins
my mouth's getting dry and my hands they shake.

I say love is a drug
But I ain't taking enough
cause i don't feel no better off!
Love Someone Else
I can't sleep.
I've been stuck on this restless eve
for weeks, and weeks,
waiting for you so patiently.

I've tried to quit,
but you pull me apart at my lids
to reach in, reach in,
pinch my heart with your fingertips.

You're the face that the fortunes tell.
You're all the change in my wishing well.
Michelle, I love you,
why do you love someone else?

I'll bite my tonque,
bleed this jealous air out my lungs
but keep, i'll keep
one last breath to sing you to sleep.

No your heart it ain't his to sell.
No your stories ain't his to tell.
Michelle, I love you,
why do you love someone else?
River
Just how long will you go on thinking everybody knows
how their life's supposed to go?

Just how many times over will you fill the same void
you felt as a boy?

Love, love is a river that flows
past a shore full of people too scared to float
Well i see your face, and the current is quick,
but i know we'll be safe if we both jump in

I never knew nothing but the things that i had gotten wrong
I've waited so long to be

Right across a river from you
and a shore full of people thinking it through.
Well i see your face, and the current is quick,
but i know we'll be safe if we both jump in.

Love, love, it flows to the sea
past a shore full of people who think it's too deep.
Well i see your face, and the current is quick,
but i know we'll be safe if we both jump in.

Love, love, it's hard not to know
everybody's just crowding 'round embers of hope.
Well i see your face, and the current is quick,
but i know we'll be safe if we both jump in.
Lost and Found
When Leonard wrote of Suzanne
all rags and feathers
when Stephanie Lynn traded it in
her lace for leather

I've been home now
four of these days
looking for ways
to tell you and tell me it too
home ain't this place

I'm a ghost in this town
I was lost and you found me

You saw mirrors and smoke in my eyes
lies in my teeth
But you knew it
you picked at the seams
and saw me beneath

I'm a ghost in this town
I was lost and you found me

Did i fight it or let it begin?
Is it over or just now sinking in?

And you sing, that bell that you ring
and I'm at your feet
The Honor in Your Fight
I wasn't born your brother
I wasn't born your friend
When stakes are blood and favor
Ain't neither gonna end

You control the damage
To those you put to work
You're taking your advantage
They're coughing up your dirt

You're so good at being right
Tossing wood into the fire
And now the battlefield is burning bright
With the standards that you write
So where's the honor in your fight?

I know what you're doing
The Republic that you cite
Your Athens is in ruins
Your Justice is a lie

And cleaning off your mantle
Ain't brushing off the mound
Cause history don't just cancel out
The next time around

You're so good at being right
Tossing wood into the fire
And now the battlefield is burning bright
With the standards that you write
So where's the honor in your fight?
Light Years
Your fleet of paper planes
won't make it in the rain, not any design
The air's not gonna hold 'em,
no matter how you fold 'em, don't waste your time.

Come by when you come to
Come by and I'll show you

Just put me in your car girl, get us out of here
We can spend the night watching stars live out their years
Tell me when the light stops bleeding from the wound
And we can start a candle on the dark side of the moon

You call this hill your home
You hug that heavy stone as it's rolling away
But when you gonna notice
Your centrifugal motives keep you in place

Come by when you come to
Come by and i'll show you

And if you feel like your life story
is just one life sentence after the next
and it's got you worried, look up in the sky,
Worries live and die when we become light years...

How's that make you feel?

Just put me in your car girl, get us out of here
We can spend the night watching stars live out their years
Tell me when the light stops bleeding from the wound
And we can start a candle on the dark side of the moon
The Missing Bird
All of her things, just where she left them
The wire cage, the missing bird
The record player counts in quiet
The coiled page waits with its words
Waits for her to return

I'm taking space, that's why I'm here
she takes her time, just like the dawn
And so I rise a patient soldier pacing the night,
I'm marching on, marching on

I get no rest
Guarding your room
Are you coming home soon?

She's just a rumor, like the weather
She rains and snows, she comes and goes
claiming truths are cannon fodder
(and I'm the fool that holds her coat!
what I don't know...)

I get no rest
Guarding your room
Are you coming home soon?

Don't want to write another love song
just to give away, to bury at sea.
She's got her name written in the mountains
above this place, for all to see
She don't need me.
